Isee fidel is mouthing off again so he must be a lot better: in havana he says the u.s. will kill three billion people by the u.s. plans to use biofuels . ??
Castro is saying that it takes 20 million acres of land to produce 1 million barrels of ethanol. If ethanol is worth more than corn, farmers will stop focusing on food.

In a world where food crops are destroyed, to prop up prices, while people are starving, I can see the validity of his argument.

I think he is an idiot but every once in a while, even a blind squirrel finds a nut.
Here is one report of the announcement

He can't feed his own people and Brazil has been producing ethanol for decades.

Fidel is talking to himself again. He must be feeilng better.

Supercuban

Funny thing is, he didn't say that, it was a news wire that he or someone took and added a commentary and signed it Fidel.

Didn't he said he was going to reactivate all 166 sugar mills in order to produce alcohol fuel ?

The thing is that a massive production of methanol by the US and other countries will put a big hole on Venezuela's production of oil, or the need for chavez' oil.

I guess he also acknowledging that without what the US produces half of the world will starve.
No it won't put a hole in anything in Venezuela in the least. China will buy every drop of oil that they can produce and pay premium prices for it. Why not... they got lots of money, especially when you take into account that they will pay for it with some of the TRILLION dollars owed to them, mainly by the Good Old U.S.A.
Cash is king baby and the chinks got container ship loads of it to burn.
The US exports 5% of the grains consumed in the world. The rest comes from other sources.

The US is the second largest exporter of Meats. I guess that is something.

I think the US was important in this a decade or more ago. Like airplanes and automobiles, its slipped to just significant.

A bushel of corn produces about 3 gallons of ethanol. 20 million acres, at 150 bushels per acre, would produce 214 million barrels, NOT 1 million barels (1 barel = 42 gallons). However, 20 million acres is a LOT of corn, like over 20% of the corn produced annually in the US. Even if the US did convert 20 million acres to ethanol, it would last exactly 25 days per year, since the US uses 8.3 million barrels of oil per day. In other words, there are imports as long as the oil lasts.

As usual, Fidel is talking out of his do. One of the biggest problems facing the third world, which our Mattie will confirm, is that world grain prices have been maintained aritifically low, so that third world farmers cannot compete with subisidized grain from the US and (mainly) subisidized grain from Europe, even in their own markets. The stimulus of new demand from ethanol plants has brought the price of grains back to life. Higher prices stimulate supply, except of course, in communist economies, where it takes a bright light at the top to make that decision. IF fidel gave a  rats do about food supply to the poor of the world, he would liberate cuban agriculture to allow cuban farmers to compete for the money he currently spends buying food from US farmers. Ain't gonna happen, because it is not and has never been about anything but keeping the power.  Scratch a dictator and they are all the same.

Btw, where is Matt, life is just not the same without our resident commie.
I thought the US used 20 million barrels of oil a day. I have no knowledge of Ethanol. Just quoting Fido. I think the US imports 8 million barrels a day.

You will get no argument from me about Fidel. Him being full of crap is not a tough sell.

Yep it will put a hole if prices of oil drop below $30 a barrel.
The Arabs also will have to eat sand and oil for dinner.

It costs about $3.00 a barrel to pump oil out of the ground in the Middle East. Much of the cost is actually fuel.
They were eating pretty high on the hog when oil was just $20.00 a barrel a few years ago. China is growing at more than 10 percent GNP a year and is forcasted by US sources to continue this growth for at least 5 more years at a minimum. The price MAY drop to $50 a barrel but it will NEVER be dirt cheap like it was for over 100 years. Get use to it. They are predicting another 50 to 75 cents rise per gallon of gas again this year. The only way to get cheap gas for America now is to take it. Oh... wait a minute.....you are trying to do that right now!
Cheap fuel will surface again, it will only be cheap compared to today. I have a friend who always says anything which will power a 3000 lb. car to move 15 miles or more, for only a couple of bucks is pretty cheap. How much would it cost to hire people to push the car that far?
We just need to change our attitude towards the value of fuel. Its going to be alot more expensive than it was in the past.

Supercuban

Believe me , if the uS wants to exploit a new clean source of fuel such as ethanol and hydrogen, all those countries will have to eat crow.
That might take away the power of Islam and the new Chavism Communism.
