One of my friends is in havava right-now.He is living at "Casa Miriam Hostal Colonial ".The other places which are suggested by him are:

Yes you might try looking for casas particulares - private houses - with rooms to rent. Do a search for casa particular and Fontenar. If you want to get a better feel of what Cuba is all about, staying in a Casa Particular is preferable over a normal hotel.

Most places that call themselves "hostal" are small hotels. (Hostal Valencia is certainly like that).
Casas Particulares (private houses) normally only have a couple or rooms.
I do not know of anywhere taht would fit your idea of a hostal.

Uptil i think cuba is expensive. It is not really a backpacker place.Hostels do not exist. cuba is in the tourist business to make money.In Havana it will cost you about $30 a night if not more for a casa particular.
