Hi,
Since i am planning a trip to Cuba, i would like to know, whether is there a bigger risk of food poisoning or diarrhea then in other caribbean countries (as i have read some stories).
Thanks for every reply
Allways a risk of food poisoning no matter where you travel esp cuba as far as sanitation in the food they are the most callous food handlers I know of : So allways be carefull what you eat or drink only something that you can see thats well cooked and fresh ; Drink only bottled water ;but even thats no guarantee ;stay away from all kinds of salads creamed salads are mostly recycled food from meals before ; cut up fruit is risky cause one doesnt know where that knife has been before ;
All in all cuba is a good time to diet ;but have a good time anyway cheers.
If you drink the water, it is a guarantee you will get sick. Only drink bottled water.
About the same as other tropical countries. But water outside the resort can give you serious problems such as worms.

Hi..
I have been to Cuba six times. The first two occasions I was ill for 24 hours each time. The last four trips I have been fine, even though I eat food from street stalls and am not fussy about what I eat. Perhaps my stomach has become used to Cuban bugs. My daughter has been with me twice and did not get ill at all; the same for an English girlfriend. My son came once and was ill. I went with a tour of 28 people and about 25% got ill. Based on those experiences, I would say that you have a 25% chance of being ill for 24 hours. Take some diocalm or other such medicine with you.

I'd rather drink a coffee with water taken out of a 55 gallon drum than to eat another 300g bacon cheeseburger served (not sure if its still is) at the Jazz Cafe the Galeria del Paseo in Havana. That cost me the sweats, massive diarrhea and 7 lbs. in three days. Many tourists confuse the consequences of too much drink for too long with food poisoning. At home in Cuba, I have NEVER had a problem.

Since my mother-in-law spent 6.5 months with us last year, the food handling practices at the house has become equal to ours. I tend to think our kids are the barometer for problems with Cuban food. We rarely stay on a resort and they have never had any issues... Mind you, we always insist food be well done at restaurants...
I had food poisoning in the U.S at least 3 times and "Ciguatera" from fish as well, Cuba is not exempt, but you are more likely to get parasites than poisoning in Cuba.IMO

I have eaten picua in Corralio with Cuban fishermen and was warned that my tripa de yuma may not handle it...lol. No problems. I have friends that have had ciguatera from fish (usually picua) and suffered for years from it.

PP, would have loved to see you and AK for a beer in Miami but I have to get back to Canada. Orlando has been great but the Puerto Ricans here dominate. Kinda sucks to eat at the Cuba Libre only to see the staff is predominantly Puerto Rican and American. Nice people and all, just missing the authentic Cuban touch. Can hardly wait to visit Miami con mi familia...

Let me know I'll take care of the authentic Cuban Food ,for you and your family.

Any reef fish can have Ciguatera as they get it from a plant that sardines eat called manzanilla and it passes down the food chain, I got it from a grouper.

Just make sure that any place you eat cooks their food all the way through. Don't be afraid to look at it and check that it isn't raw. A lot of people make the mistake of drinking the water while on vacation. As long as you stick to bottled water, you will have a great vacation.

If you eat food in any ordinary hotels or restaurant you might get food poison but there are so many international hotels and restaurant or fast food in different country then why to get worry. But its better to have a [url[/url] if you are still afraid of something that might happens to you.

Product placement. :-P

You should get a job in the movie biz.

Cuba has about one of the worst water distribution systems, I know. Water from a load of dirty bath water is poured into a tank in front of the building and pumped through the pipes never cleaned a kind of gravity system of the houses.
Why don't you get a hep A vaccination ?

Always bring pepto bismol to coat your stomach in the morning as it is a cheap form of insurance against getting sick on your holiday.

Bring immodium too.

Are you fcuking crazy ? Eating hamburgers in Cuba ? In a land where everything is overcooked, the hamburger is the sole exception, and lets not forget that it is mystery meat.
My wife and I have been to Cuba about 13 or 14 times (lost track) neither of us have ever had any problems with the food or water (lots of problems with too much rum). We would initially buy some bottled water and then get the empties refilled in the kitchen which has potable water.
At the Marea resort they told us not to drink the local water - resort water O.K. !!!
