SA (Africa) minister heads to Cuba

International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoane Mashabane was leaving for Cuba on Monday to co-chair a bilateral commission this week.

"Nkoana Mashabane will co-chair the sixth South Africa-Cuba Joint Bilateral Commission with the Cuban Minister of Foreign Investment and Trade, Mr Marcelino Medina," the department said in a statement on Monday.

The commission will sit in Havana on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Monday, other senior officials will hold separate meetings.

The joint commission was established in February 2001 to review and find ways of extending the two countries' economic, scientific, technical and commercial ties.

"It is expected that, in addition to the existing list of agreements, an agreement on environment will be signed."

Nkoane Mashabane will also use her time in Cuba to prepare for President Jacob Zuma's state visit to the country in 2010. - Sapa
