Similar to a post below- does anyone have more information on how to be able to stay with a Cuban boyfriend? Does immigration request hotel / casa particular reciepts upon leaving? Thanks!

no I've never had immigration want any hotel or casa receipts upon departure.

I've been told sometimes they spot check what you put on the form when entering the country and check to see if you spent time there and if they catch you, you can have problems next time you come back.

if you want to stay past your normal 1 month allowed for most Westerners and extend another month, then the god awful wait to get this done at the Immigration office in Miramar, if you're there, they will check where you've been staying.

I actually wasted a half day waiting in line there one time only to learn that with my other passport, I was allowed to stay 3 months without any extensions/problems.

(they changed that shortly afterwards)

(I think Canadians can now stay up to 6 months)
Lucha, no receipts required upon exit.

Uhhhh, wonder WHAT hotel you'll be staying with yr novio, (sure there are many here who would luv the name) as cubanos/as aren't staying with a foreigner in any hotel without a marriage certificado. Now if you're bribing security at the hoteles then that is a different thang all together. And you will be under the pistola to get yr guy pal out by a certain hour. The fancier the place, the bigger the bite on yr wallet, as the chain of guards is largo. I've paid from $10 to $50. And sometimes when the staff got to know me, they would let my hombre in gratis. Mostly for afternoon delight.

As for casa part, yr chico only has to register with the owners & show his carnet & he can enjoy the pleasure of yr company 24/7.

Have fun, s
This is a bit of different scenario but Immigration visited me at my Suegros house (where my wife, son and I were staying) on the 4th day of our trip asking why I had not gotten my A2 Family visa. I had forgotten that they told me I had 3 days to get it and that I would need it upon exit.

Fucking Immigration.. It didn't help matters that my Suegro had been drinking and said something to the effect of "vete p'a la pinga" to the Immigration officer. Icon_mrgreen
Luchare, as you see, neither here, nor on the Thorn Tree, will you get a fully comprehensive set of answers. The Cuban rules are applied a bit randomly, so it all depends.

Formally, it has been hinted by Truetown at the Thorn Tree, that a Cuban can go to immigration before a friend arrives and report, thus evading the necessity to get the A-2 visa, although this procedure is unknown to most people. The more common procedure is that within 72 hours you have to go to immigration to change the status of your visa to A-2 so that you can stay with your friend. Most people in Cuba know about this. At immigration there is a brief interview, where you are asked about how you came to know each other, how long etc. The person accompanying you to immigration is not necessarily (or even likely) your boyfriend, but the holder of the title to the house.

However, there are examples of such applications being revoked, so a plan B is to stay at a licensed casa.

I prefer the A-2 visa, because with A-2 I can go with any kind of transportation, also in a private car. Without the A-2, if you go with a bicitaxi, or in a private car, the owner/driver may be fined for "illegal tourist activities". The A-2 renders more peace of mind.

I hope you will enjoy your time in Cuba luchare.
I will disagree somewhat with Cocuyo's post above. Most Cubans have no idea whatsoever of what an A-2 visa is all about. I would be a little suspicious of a potential BF/GF who did!

I am totally unaware of any arrangement whereby "a Cuban can go to immigration before a friend arrives and report, thus evading the necessity to get the A-2 visa". Care to elaborate on this one a bit further?

Sorry not. I too was totally unaware of such a procedure, it was mentioned by Truetown at the Thorn Tree forum. Maybe he can elaborate?

OP:” From what I read, it is illegal for me to stay at his place without being married. “

This is not accurate. Everybody has the right to go to the nearest Immigration office and declare –before arrival- that a relative, friend or girl/boy-friend will be coming and staying at its home. It will be given a document about the report and granted permission. This is a process that applies once in a year time scenario usually (sometimes twice). Why is this usually not mentioned by some locals? Too many answers for that question but hidden in some of the answers you could find the candor of your sentimental relationship…just a hint.

BTW I forgot to mention that there is no need to change your tourist’s visa (card). This is not the A-2 process.

I do NOT find Truetown's information accurate. OTOH, he and I tend to be more than confrontational on the TT BB, so in the interest of "harmony" there, I'll just let it pass.

Your readership here should be aware that there is no known legal bypass for the A-2 visa.

Aye! I have no objection. I too arrived at confrontation in my first encounter with the fellow...

However, I found his statement about bypassing the A-2 process interesting, although I would still opt for the A-2, as it saves people a lot of hassle.

I am puzzled. I asked several times for specific info on the process he mentioned, but I got no answer, and presently a thread I opened to ask about it has been removed at the TT; no big deal, it often happens that a thread is lifted out for checking and then reappears, but I didn't attack anyone, I just asked for elaboration on the issue. I want to know what document that could sidestep the A-2, and what decree or law that is relevant, as well as the price for said service.

My conclusion so far is inclined against the info being flawed; I don't know this Truetown, he seems some kind of official entitled to do the TT on the web. I guess it is embarrassing then being caught pants down with inaccurate statements...
"Vete pa la pinga" means go to hell or fuck off. Immigration does not have control of the whereabouts of tourist visiting Cuba. Cuba is plagued with snitchers and jealous mediocre people who did not have any thing before Castro and do not have anything now. Some one rat you out. So when I go to Cuba, I drive an old moscvitch and stay away from all the people. I only care to visit my very good friends and stay away from crowd. This people did only thing they do is to rat and rat just because they do not have the means or the luck of getting goods like the others. These are son of bitches that I hate with all my heart. Wait till Capitalism hit the island.
