Castro blames airport shootout on U.S., militant Posada

HAVANA -- Convalescing Cuban leader Fidel Castro blamed an airliner hijack attempt on the United States, saying in a statement published Tuesday that two soldiers who seized a plane and killed an officer thought they would escape punishment if they reached U.S. soil.

Castro linked the failed attempt to the recent release of anti-communist militant Luis Posada Carriles from U.S. custody on bond. Cuba's Foreign Ministry distributed Castro's statement to international reporters by e-mail late Monday and it was published Tuesday in the Communist Party daily Granma.

The hijacking, 80-year-old leader declared, was ``a consequence of freeing the monster of terror.''

``The impunity and the material benefits that have been rewarded for nearly half a century for all violent action against Cuba stimulate such acts,'' he wrote.

Cuba for weeks has protested a U.S. judge's decision to release Posada on bond pending a hearing on immigration fraud charges scheduled for Friday. He is being held under house arrest at his family's home in Miami, and is wearing an electronic monitoring device.

Cuba and Venezuela accuse him of masterminding a 1976 Cubana airliner bombing that killed 73 people, and Venezuela is seeking his extradition for trial in that case. Cuba also accuses him of orchestrating a string of 1997 Havana hotel bombings, including one that killed an Italian tourist.

Posada denies involvement in both cases.

Castro has not been seen in public since July, when he announced he had undergone emergency intestinal surgery and ceded his presidential functions to his 75-year-old brother Raul, the defense minister.

The elder Castro has been shown occasionally in official photographs and videos since, appearing stronger in recent images, and since late March he has penned a series of columns titled ``Reflections of the Commander in Chief.''

In the new column, Castro wrote that the two soldiers involved in the Thursday morning hijacking attempt had not yet been tried because both were wounded, one of them shot.

Although Cuba now rarely employs the death penalty, the non-governmental Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation on Monday urged governments around the world to petition Havana not to send the would-be hijackers to a firing squad.

Castro wrote that the Cuban people were ``profoundly indignant over what has happened'' and added, ``A great deal of serenity and cold blood are needed to face these issues.''

The two soldiers were among three who earlier escaped from their military post, killing a sentry and wounding a second before fleeing with automatic rifles.

One was captured before the hijacking attempt. But officials said the other two commandeered a city bus with eight people aboard, forced the driver to travel to the Havana airport and marched the group onto an empty plane and demanded to be flown to the United States.

While on the craft, an army lieutenant colonel who had been on the bus was shot four times and killed when he tried to stop the defecting soldiers, Castro's statement said.

We all know 99% of the Cuban emigration is economic, but even if it were purely political, there are established political asylum practices that were used with all the Commie countries during the Cold War.

it's a completely unnecessary law. I have no idea why it really exists, except now to gather political support from S. Florida diehards but unfortunately it gives Fifo a convenient propaganda tool.

no one disputes this Senora Piedad, but easily the same thing if not worse can be said for Robert Mugabe (and I am sure I can think of others)

yet we don't have any special laws and or acts for anyone escaping from THAT hellhole.

Regardless of what Fidel thinks, or says, these three punks did commit murder. Yes they wanted to leave the island, but murdering an innocent victim to achieve their goal was unnecessary.

It is Raul Castro’s first test as Cuba’s man in charge. Surely he’ll get some sage advice from big brother Fidel who apparently is still pulling levers behind the Wizard’s curtain. But in the end, what to do about three military conscripts who grabbed a couple of assault weapons and headed to Jose Marti airport intent on hijacking a passenger jet will rest on Raul’s shoulders.

One of the conspirators was captured. His two pals shanghaied a bus and passengers and blew on the tarmac, stormed the plane and eventually were captured after what appears to be a firefight. When the smoke cleared, a Cuban army colonel was dead. The young army draftees were taken into custody.

“I think that he will act quickly and decisively and they will probably be executed within the week,” said Jaime Suchlicki, Director of the Institute for Cuban and Cuban American Studies at the University of Miami. “He has to send the military and everyone, that he is in command and he will not tolerate this kind of thing,” Suchlicki added, “he has to do it.”

Hijacking of Cuban boats and aircraft has not gone well in recent years. There are two Cuban passenger planes sitting at the airport in Key West. Hijackers intent on leaving Cuba commandeered the Russian built AN-27 and an ancient DC-3, all sit in American Jails. Those incidents occurred in March of 2003. A month later, three men grabbed control of a harbor ferry and tried to escape Havana and headed for the U.S. They were stopped, arrested, tried, and sent to a firing squad in short order.

In this post-Sept. 11, 2001 world, it is likely best to not attempt an airline hijacking, no matter how just the cause may seem. An attempted hijacking at a U.S. airport would have brought a similar response. The only difference would be that the perpetrators would have gotten lawyers and the legal process would keep them alive for years. We do not know if what occurred was a political act, or an event that just spiraled out of control, however, you can bet the minute they grabbed the AK-47’s they used in the aborted hijack, their fate was sealed.

For Raul, the decision is easy. He will get some flak from members of the European Union who protested long and hard about the summary executions surrounding the ferryboat incident back in 2003. But it will make no difference. He has to send a message and it should be easy for a man who has ordered the deaths of thousands, personally pulling the trigger early on in the history of the Revolution.

El principio del fin ya ha comenzado y a la huida en masa orquestada por mafias castristas hay que añadir más deserciones de soldados que si pueden escapan armados; además tengo confirmación de que el Teniente Coronel muerto en el asalto del avión fue el primero en disparar y lo que todos los integrantes de las tropas especiales notaron con asombro, tras los sucesos, que los soldados que pretendían escapar eran apenas unos niños.

El asalto conducido por las tropas especiales se produjo desde las alas del avión y se emplearon gases lacrimógenos, las órdenes eran que los querían vivos y que todo debía quedar resuelto antes de las 6 A. M.

El oficial Acuña al ver que los jóvenes soldados no deponían su actitud y al amparo de los gases abrió fuego que fue repostado por Leandro Cerezo Sirut, el blanquito y por Yoan Torres Martínez, el negrito. Estos apelativos, blanquito y negrito fueron usados para nombrarlos por las fuerzas especiales para evitar equívocos pues no conocían sus nombres


Al responder al fuego del oficial los jóvenes soldados, las tropas especiales asaltantes desataron una tremenda balacera, el Teniente Coronel Acuña quedo entre dos fuegos y al intentar darse la vuelta para que sus compañeros pararan el fuego recibió una ráfaga en el abdomen. Debido a la posición es de suponer que fue víctima de fuego amigo y no de los soldados que pretendía huir de su patria.

Teniente Coronel Víctor Ibo Acuña Velázquez murió en el trayecto del avión a la ambulancia pues a causa de una herida en el abdomen quedo con los intestinos a la vista y su sangrado en cascada hizo el resto, fue el primero en ser evacuado y el primero en fallecer.

Por el rápido enterramiento y condecoración suponemos que había que ocultar algo y aunque las balas que le dieron muerte fueron extraídas de su cadáver no se supo nada más de ellas y probablemente nunca se sabrá.

Yoan Torres Martínez, el negrito, fue herido en el abdomen y esposado a la camilla. No cesaba de repetir entre intensos dolores que el oficial disparó primero, imploraba entre gemidos por su padecimiento que le quitaran las esposas; a lo que se le contestó que si tuvo cojones para hacer lo que hizo también tendría que soportar eso. En la ambulancia se pudo detener el sangrado de la herida y fue trasladado al Hospital Nacional, más tarde, a pesar de las órdenes de mantenerlo con vida falleció; yo no creo en las casualidades y de gente que las cree está lleno el cementerio de Colón.

Leandro Cerezo Sirut, el blanquito, tuvo más suerte que su compañero por la zona en la que fue herido en la pierna y ha podido salvar su vida para ser juzgado sumarísimamente. Los soldados que le custodiaban contemplaron su cuerpo profusamente tatuado y concluyeron que el muchacho siempre debía de haber sido problemático.

Si nos brindan imágenes de su juicio no dejen de observar sus ojos, pues estará drogado a conciencia, práctica habitual para mantener callados a los reos. Todas las señales indican que será condenado a muerte, yo deseo que esa sentencia no se cumpla nunca.

Un soldado de la misma unidad de los anteriores se encontraba pasando la previa en Pinar del Río y ha conseguido fugarse armado con un AK; ya se ha establecido un operativo para capturarlo y nuevamente nos tememos lo peor pues se dieron órdenes de que lo del aeropuerto no se repitiera nunca más y las tropas especiales no tienen en estos momentos los nervios suficientemente templados como para afrontar situaciones de especial tensión, deseemos que todo concluya sin violencia.

Cuantas deserciones más ha habido por todo el país, es un dato que todavía será una incógnita para los cubanos, pero conociendo a los desgobernantes es de suponer que estos episodios se están ocultando celosamente para no ser reportados al exterior.

Como ven, la situación de descontento y hastío de la población está ya en niveles nunca conocidos y son como siempre los más jóvenes las primeras víctimas del afán desmedido de libertad que se ha contagiado más rápido de lo que nunca nadie pudiera sospechar.

Como siempre en mi patria, todo es susceptible de hacer negocio. Les voy a narrar lo que concluye una somera investigación y que otro día les relataré con más detalle.

Los cubanos que desean salir del país son contactados, en cuanto radio bemba se entera de sus intenciones, por redes de individuos que poseen y construyen pinazas para huir de mi patria, lo normal es que te pidan 5.000 fulas para ponerte en Haití y si se pretende arribar a Puerto Rico la cifra puede subir hasta las 10.000 o más, todo depende de la candidez del individuo y sus ansias por escapar.


Las tropas guardafronteras escoltan estos viajes pues tienen su parte en el asunto, ignoro hasta el momento hasta cuan arriba llega las fulas de los desesperados, pero conociendo el funcionamiento de la contrainteligencia militar supongo que será muy, pero que muy arribita.

Quizás todavía haya incrédulos que no quieran creer que estos hechos han ocurrido como les he narrado pues como dijo Antúnez, son atrocidades que cuando las cuentas te dicen que es mentira, en este caso he sido especialmente cuidadoso y la narración expuesta es fruto de haberla confirmado no de una, ni de dos, ni de tres fuentes, sino de algunas más para poder afirmar con rotundidad que los hechos ocurrieron como los he descrito a pesar de que los voceros oficiales sigan gritando que es mentira, no por mucho elevar la voz van a convertir su mentira en verdad; no mientras haya cubanos dispuestos a enfrentar la muerte por causa de intentar contar las noticias como ocurrieron y no como los servicios de información quieren que se cuenten.

Se aún algo más, pero este detalle lo guardo para enfrentar en persona a su protagonista, algún día…ojala muy pronto… tenga oportunidad de hacerlo…

Vista la situación actual no me queda sino continuar pidiendo la inmediata e incondicional liberación de todos los injustamente encarcelados; seguir animando a la disidencia a que continúe trabajando para conseguir vivir en Democracia y Libertad en nuestra propia patria y rogar a los organismos internacionales que apoyen explícitamente a la disidencia interna para la consecución de estos objetivos.
