That has been brewing for years. Odessa is an area inside Georgia which is heavily populated by "Russians". The Georgians have wanted them out for a long time. These are people, not military. They ended up there when Georgia split.
Russia has accused Georgia of genocide and responded by sending "peace keepers" into the Russian areas of Georgia.
Georgia threatened Russia with war over the Peace Keepers about a year ago. Putin made it into a joke, essentially making fun of Misha, the President of Georgia. He also added that "perhaps Russia should just take the Odessa area back again". As if Misha was irrelevant.
In response, Putin banned imports from Georgia and crippled their economy. It got worked out but Putin left a Misha looking pathetic.
So for some reason, Georgia attacked the Russians in Odessa.. I cant imagine what got in this guys head. Geogia has little offensive military power. About 220 tanks of 70's vintage. They did however end up with a bunch of SA-11 and SA-8 Surface to air missile systems. Russia will lose jets to Georgia until those units are destroyed.
This will likely be the end of Misha. Georgia will be destroyed by this. Google a picture of Grozny and see what Putin did to that city when angered. Much of it is a parking lot now.

This is actually a huge deal. The other break away countries will be freaking out over this. Chechnya was never allowed to leave so technically Putin destroyed part of Russia in that war.
With any luck, Russia will make a point and stop. If they dont, its likely the maps will need to be re-drawn again and Misha will be in exile in New York.
Georgia has asked for a cease fire as of tonight. Russia is offering no truce at this time.

Georgia wanted to join NATO - Bush lobbied for it - but the application was turned down for now. If the application had been approved the west would be at war with Russia right now.

Georgia is screwed. Doubt they will even be in Nato now.
Russia sent another 10,000 troops into Georgia today, plus a naval dispatchment to the coast. They bombed the runways of Georgia's airforce bases, and shelled the crap out of Poti today.
By the time this is over, Georgia will be a land locked country, Russia wont give up the land they take tomorrow and Monday.
By Monday morning, Russia will control the major pipeline feeding the freighters in the Black Sea. Its the only pipeline not under Russian control.
Georgia will likely end up looking like Grozny in 1996
