OTTAWA, June 5 (UPI) -- Canada's national defense and NATO contribution in submarines is down to one vessel for at least a year and a half, defense documents show.

Documents seen by the Ottawa Citizen under Freedom of Information requests show only one of four secondhand diesel submarines purchased from Britain for nearly $900 million 10 years ago by a previous Liberal government is seaworthy.

A briefing note prepared for Defense Minister Peter MacKay seen by the newspaper advised him to play down the series of setbacks in refitting the Victoria-class subs, and rather focus on the "important strategic" value they play.

Repairs and upgrades to the three mothballed subs have a time line of one coming on line by 2009, and a final date of 2012 for the other two, the report said.

One of the subs caught fire off the coast of Ireland in October 2004 on its maiden voyage from Scotland to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a Canadian sailor was killed and eight other injured.

You guys bought used submarines from England?  There is a joke about Great Britian.
You know why the British don't build computers?
They can't figure out how to  make them leak oil.

The aircraft I fly has Rolls Royce Dart engines. If they are not leaking oil, means it is time to add some.

LOL - The funnier issue is that a country with a whopping 202,080 km of coastline like Canada has one submarine to protect it. The USA with a meager 19,924 km of coastline has 72 with 6 more under construction. This is telling what the Canadians actually owe us for their protection -- what ungrateful folks they often are.

The US has to spend over 4.08% of $13,790,000,000,000 on our military while Canada spends a meager 1.1% of $1.4 trillion on theirs. By their mere proximity we take care of our northern brothers yet all I see here is complains from them about how bad the US is. Yes, we spend (2007) $626,000,000,000 to Canada's meager $15 billion.

Personally I think Canada should subsidize some of the US military expenditures since they benefit so greatly from it.
We have icebergs, we don't need those subs.
Our investment is in frigates.
We are building icebreaker frigates to keep you guys out of the NW passage.
We need protection from your protection.
The USA has 10 times the population of Canada. Using simple math, Canada "should" have 7-8 submarines. We had 4 diesel-electric boats before we bought the 4 from the UK. That would have given us 8 except the ones we bought turned out to be garbage. One Canadian sailor died in a fire on the first trip of one of these subs from England to Canada. At the end of the Second World War Canada had the 3rd largest Navy and 4th largest Air Force in the world. 1.1 million Canadians served in WW II out of a population of 11-12 million. That would be 1 in 10 in uniform.

Lay the blame for Canada's military woes at the feet of the previous Lieberal governments. Decades of cut-backs bled the Forces dry. Note that then Prime Minister Chretien canceled a contract to buy EH-101 helicopters to replace the antique Sea King chopper. For this breach of contract, Canadian taxpayers paid $600-$700 million in penalties. The Lieberals then re-tendered the contract and then had to scramble to "re-jig" the contract when it became apparent that the EH-101 would again have the winning bid. This loss of face would have been a political disaster, so the Lieberals did what all Lieberals do. Sacrifice serving men and women for political gain. We STILL don't have a replacement for the Sea Kings which are STILL flying and STILL crashing.

We FINALLY have a government that believes in the Canadian Armed Forces. They have started what would pass as massive defense spending here in Canada. For example, Canada now has CC-117 Globemaster III heavy lift aircraft, and is in the market for replacements for our fleet of CF-18 fighters. Our Halifax class frigates are world class. They are not as large as a US cruiser, but they have state of the art electronics and weaponry. Our Leopard 1 tanks are being replaced with Leopard 2's and are serving in Afghanistan right now.

Yup, and we would have had an awesome Aerospace Defence Industry except for the actions of the Conservative Government of Diefenbaker and his actions is closing Avro Aircraft and cancelling the Arrow project.
When Obama becomes President, we won't have a military budget anymore so our numbers will look like Canada's.

I agreed whole heartedly. Diefenbaker destroyed Canada's aerospace industry, and we have not yet recovered from it. From what I have read, the Arrow fighter/interceptor would STILL be a viable threat to those who would do us harm. Instead, we have a couple of nose cones and scale models of the Arrow in a museum with all the prototype aircraft being destroyed upon project cancellation. I would piss on Diefenbakers grave if I ever had the opportunity. (I'd take a dump on Trudeau's) Icon_mrgreen
Step aside Howie....Me first!!!!!!!!
We dont need big guns. People like us, and we have more oil than Exxon so we dont need to defend the world from WMD's.
