1. Cuba and Spain reestablish ties
Spain's foreign minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, became the highest level Spanish official to travel to Cuba in nearly a decade when he met with his Cuban counterpart, Felipe Perez Roque, to discuss mending the ruptured ties between the two countries, the Associated Press reported. Cuba and Spain signed an agreement to study ways to protect their common interests and to re-examine Cuba's debt to Spain, which total more than $1 billion. Cuban Foreign Minister Perez Roque said that in his talks with Moratinos throughout the week, "the theme of international cooperation for the promotion of human rights is not excluded," the AP reported.
