Since you're scared to visit, you really don't have a valid opinion to make. There are a lot of places on this planet that could be seen as paradise yet the reality of making a living and closeness to family keeps one from living in certain places. It's all living in balance, reality and compromise for what is the best overall.

I have been to much scarier places than Cuba, I can assure ya.
